I shouldn't like
this disc. First, there's his gangsta/disco name: Sonny G. Then there're the
"W"s, often extended into a near-Bert Lahr. But the ensemble is
strong, Joey DeFrancesco's organ chugs things along extremely well, the selection
of standards is strong (especially the rarer ones such as the title track),
and I'm won over by his nearly but not quite rat-packy sound. It's gonna stay
in my collection. Scott Yanow's thorough liner notes reveal that Chicagoan
Sonny is 67, influenced by Sinatra, and this is his first recording. Try a
streamed sample from the "jukebox" on his website.
