BEN GERSTEIN AND TONY MALABY
Live at Downtown Music Gallery, NYC
September 27, 2009, 8pm set
by Steve Koenig
The horn duo of
Ben Gerstein and Tony Malaby offer you this concert from Downtown Music Gallery,
New York's record store for jazz, improv, experimental music and more. For as
long as the store's been around, they've offered a free-admission Sunday evening
music series ranging from the stars of the scene to the unknowns.
The set was recorded
live with no edits, save two seconds (and, unfortunately, two notes) when, after
working up a sweat after the second of the three improvisations, they took a
water break and I put the recorder on pause.
Trombonist/artist
Ben Gerstein has lived in New York City since 1995, originally hailing from
Santa Barbara, California. He collaborates and performs regularly with many
different groups and individuals, concerned primarily with free-improvisation.
Saxophonist and
composer Tony Malaby has become a fixture on the jazz scene with many fine recordings
to his name. Tamarindo (Clean Feed Records) made my top ten of 2008 list.
Please support
the musicians by buying their recordings and attending their performances. If
you like what you hear, ask to get on their mailing lists.
We thank Ben Gerstein,
Tony Malaby and Bruce Lee Gallanter of Downtown Music Gallery for sharing this
music with us.
