This fifty-five minute live set is vibrant and riveting. This is the Musicians'
Gift to you, our readers.
Acoustic Levitation
would like to thank the perfectly-named Steve Swell and man-about-town Steve
Dalachinsky, as well as these fine musicians, each a major player on the scene,
in both senses.
Dalachinsky, who
often contributes to these pages, has always been a fine poet and performer,
but this recording is witness to my belief that over the last few years he's
truly come into his own in confidence, style, and tangible energy of his performances
with improvisers. Check out some of his youtube clips for further gulps of this
special draught.
Please support
your favorite musicians (and treat yourself at the same time) by buying their
commercially-available discs and attending live performances as often as you
can, at the Bowery Poetry
Club and other small and vital venues wherever you live.
Steve Swell's music
can be found on labels including CIMP, not two, Ayler, clean feed, and Delmark.
A good starting place might be his Brasswood Trio, with bassist Tom Abbs and
drummer Geoff Mann, on Still In Movement, CIMP 285. Enter steveswell.com
for a further look at this intricate, powerful artist and educator, who won
Best Trombonist 2008 from the Jazz Journalists Association. You also can buy
many of his discs directly.
Steve Dalachinsky's
CDs, books and art are available from Rogue Art, Hopscotch, Silkheart and others.
Especially recommended is his new collaboration with photographer Jacques Bisceglia,
Reaching Into The Unknown - 1964-2009 (RogueArt). It's a 430-page collection
of Bisceglia's full-page candids of musicians ranging from Monk to Pharoah to
Zorn, interspersed with Dalachinsky's poems inspired by same musicians. Steve
Swell's trombone jumps out from page 386.
These can be obtained
from DowntownMusicGallery.com,
cadencebuilding.com,
and other quality distributors worldwide, or contact us at AcousticLv[at]aol.com
and we'll hook you up with the labels and musicians directly.
